Read moreEven though you might not understand all the in's and out's of a repair job, it’s still important you have enough information to make an informed decision. When faced with a list of work that "needs to get done" on your vehicle, don't feel intimidated or rushed into making a decision. Ask questions. You'll learn more about your vehicle and feel much more in control of the situation and how you're spending your hard earned money.
1. "Can you show me the problem?"
Not all problems are visually obvious, however, quite a lot are. Having a visual aid will also make a mechanic's explanation easier to understand plus you'll learn more about your car.
2. If given a list of repairs, ask "Can I prioritise these repairs?".
Not all repairs are urgent. Having a list of issues is more common than you think. Your mechanic's job is to inform you of everything they notice that's out of the ordinary, some of which, can possibly wait. Ask which are the most important.
3. "Can I see the part you are talking about?"
Before the repair has been made, ask the workshop to save the faulty part so you can take a look. You might even be able to keep it depending upon what is it! They shouldn't have a problem with this at all.
4. "Can you explain to me how you fixed it?”
Here at Rockingham Fleet & Mechanical Services the person you speak to behind the counter is a qualified mechanic who's knowledgeable explanation is easy to understand. In most workshops, however, this is not the case.
What you really want, is to build a relationship with the mechanic and not just the person behind the counter. “Ask them to explain in a technical way what the problem was, how they caught it, and how it was fixed, you have a right to know. It’ll help build a relationship and then you’ll have your own mechanic. You can bring your car to ‘Bill’ instead of just ‘Joe's Auto'. That’s the fella who will know you and know your car and, hopefully, do what he can to keep you on the road.
So bring your car into Rockingham Fleet & Mechanical Services and talk to someone who is qualified to give you the right answers in straight talk you can understand
